Creating a Shared Roadmap:
Collaboratively Advancing the Base of the Pyramid Community

A Conference for Thought Leaders

October 1-3, 2009
Ross School of Business
University of Michigan
Ann Arbor, MI

The purpose of the conference is to bring together the leading thinkers and action agents in the broad domain of "base of the pyramid" (economically viable enterprise-based approaches to poverty alleviation) with the aims of (1) sharing the latest ideas and approaches, (2) catalyzing new thinking, and (3) generating opportunities to meet fellow colleagues in an intimate setting.

This is a by-invitation only event and registration will be limited to 100 invitees in order to ensure a productive and in-depth dialog among attendees. Registration is $475 and includes conference attendance, conference materials, and breakfasts, lunches and the kick-off dinner during the conference.

The conference will incorporate sharing of the thinking of the co-authors of a landmark book on the role of business in alleviating poverty, titled Creating Mutual Value: Building Businesses and Alleviating Poverty with the Base of the Pyramid. The presentations by these authors will serve as a point of departure for the attendees to contribute to the collective understanding of the opportunities and challenges for the field. In small group sessions, we will also critically examine the key current and future issues that must be addressed to continue to move the domain forward in a productive direction. We will also have ample opportunity for networking and discussions among attendees.

Presenters include:

  • Allen Hammond, Ashoka
  • Stuart Hart, Cornell University
  • Prabhu Kandachar, Delft University of Technology
  • Robert Kennedy, William Davidson Institute & University of Michigan
  • Ted London, William Davidson Institute & University of Michigan
  • Jacqueline Novogratz, Acumen Fund
  • C.K. Prahalad, University of Michigan
  • Erik Simanis, Cornell University
  • Madhu Viswanathan, University of Illinois
  • Patrick Whitney, Institute of Design Illinois Institute of Technology

We believe this will be a signature event in helping to shape the future of the base of the pyramid domain.
